Giving Tuesday

imgres-1We all know about Black Friday.  That dreaded for some, exiting for others day when stores open before the sun and crowds of people rush for great deals on all kinds of, well, stuff. Out of Black Friday have come several other days much more generous in spirit.  One is Small Business Saturday, where people are encouraged to shop locally.  Then there’s Cyber Monday for those of us who enjoy shopping online from the comfort of the couch. For those who are not as big of fans of the ever encroaching shopping time into the Thanksgiving holiday, there is one reason to rejoice in its success. Giving Tuesday has begun a rise in popularity.

Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (this year, December 2), just under a week a way.  The United Methodist Church has taken this “holiday” by storm.  Last year, The General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) matched gifts given on this day, and raised a record $6.5 million dollars!  GBGM has decided to participate again this year and I hope you consider joining in this year as well!

Here are the facts on how this works:
– In order for your gift to be matched, you must give online at www.umcmission.org/give.
– Gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up the the first $1 million received.
– Matching gifts begins promptly at 12:00 am EST on December 2.
– Organizations eligible for the matching gifts are GBGM Advance projects.
– The maximum gift amount matched will be $2,500 with a maximum match per organization of $25,000.

Need some help deciding where to give your money? Here are a few organizations connected to our Indiana Conference worth considering:
– Mission Guatemala (#3019214) – Implementing health, education and nutrition programs in the Lake Atitlan region
– Operation Classroom (#12922Y) – Improving secondary education in Sierra Leone and Libera through partnership with the UMC
– Children of Abraham (#3021427) – Sending surplus medical supplies and equipment to areas of need around the world
– Ilula Orphan Program (#15159N) – Providing education and care for orphans with AIDS, providing AIDS testing for the community

You can search or browse a full listing of projects at www.umcmission.org/give. Get your pocketbooks (aka credit cards) ready!  Giving Tuesday is coming soon and you don’t want to miss it!
